Brazil poultry slaughter sees record month - Cepea
Bird flu fears may have sped up poultry deliveries to plants
Brazil set a monthly record for animal slaughter in May, with 575.9 million head processed, according to IBGE data released September 10. It was the highest total since records began in 1997, said a market report from Cepea.
The spike coincided with Brazil’s first confirmed bird flu case on May 15, which prompted some countries to suspend chicken imports.
Market agents are split on the cause. Some say the record numbers were planned in advance. Others believe producers rushed animals to meatpackers, worried prices would fall after the outbreak.
