Five months after a bird flu outbreak in Rio Grande do Sul, chicken farmers in São Paulo have reached record purchasing power against soybean meal, according to Cepea data. Despite earlier challenges, the poultry sector has shown resilience and efficiency.

Farmers could buy 3.85 kg of soybean meal for each kilogram of chicken sold in October, the highest level in Cepea’s series since 2004. That’s 10% more than in September and 49.3% higher than a year earlier, adjusted for inflation.

The favourable scenario stems from stronger live chicken prices and lower feed costs. In October, live chicken averaged BRL 6.27/kg in São Paulo, up 8% from September and 14.1% year-on-year. Soybean meal in Campinas averaged BRL 1,631.66 per ton, down 1.7% month-on-month and 15.9% from October 2024.
