Hong Kong halts poultry imports from Belgian, German regions
Trade suspension follows WOAH reports of H5N1 outbreaks in Europe
Hong Kong's Centre for Food Safety (CFS) has ordered an immediate suspension of poultry meat and product imports, including eggs, from parts of Belgium and Germany. The move follows notifications from the World Organisation for Animal Health confirming outbreaks of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza in Belgium’s Limburg Province and in Germany’s Districts of Verden and Recklinghausen. The CFS said the measures aim to protect public health in Hong Kong.
According to the Census and Statistics Department, Hong Kong imported about 30 tonnes of frozen poultry meat from Belgium and about 60 tonnes from Germany in the first nine months of this year.
“The CFS has contacted the Belgian and German authorities and will continue to monitor information issued by WOAH and relevant authorities on the avian influenza outbreaks. Appropriate action will be taken as the situation develops,” the spokesperson said.
