Hong Kong halts poultry imports over H5N1 outbreaks
CFS suspends shipments from Netherlands, US and Poland
Hong Kong's Centre for Food Safety (CFS) has suspended the import of poultry meat and products, including eggs, from several areas in the Netherlands, the United States and Poland, according to a government-issued press release. The suspension came after the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) reported outbreaks of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza.
The suspension, announced Monday, takes effect immediately.
A CFS spokesperson said Hong Kong imported about 150 tonnes of frozen poultry meat from the Netherlands. About 40,060 tonnes of chilled and frozen poultry meat and 2.62 million poultry eggs was imported from the US, and about 1,870 tonnes of frozen poultry meat from Poland in the first nine months of the year.
“The CFS has contacted the Dutch, American and Polish authorities over the issues and will closely monitor information issued by WOAH and the relevant authorities on the avian influenza outbreaks. Appropriate action will be taken in response to the situation,” the spokesperson said.
