Hong Kong has suspended imports of poultry meat and eggs from Utrecht Province in the Netherlands following an outbreak of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza, the Centre for Food Safety (CFS) said last week. The organisation cited a notification from the World Organisation for Animal Health

The suspension took effect immediately and applies to poultry meat and products, including eggs, from the affected area.

Hong Kong imported about 370 tonnes of frozen poultry meat from the Netherlands last year, according to the Census and Statistics Department.

A CFS spokesperson said the agency has contacted Dutch authorities and will continue to monitor updates from the World Organisation for Animal Health and other relevant authorities on the outbreak. Appropriate measures will be taken as the situation develops.
