Hong Kong has suspended imports of poultry meat and eggs from parts of Argentina and Japan following outbreaks of highly pathogenic H5 avian influenza, the Centre for Food Safety said on Friday. CFS cited notifications from the World Organisation for Animal Health and Japanese authorities as its source.

The suspension applies to poultry meat and products, including eggs, from Lobos Partido in Buenos Aires Province and Marcos Juarez Department in Córdoba Province in Argentina, as well as Hokkaido Prefecture in Japan. The measure took effect immediately.

Hong Kong imported about 2,080 tonnes of frozen poultry meat from Argentina last year. Imports from Japan included about 2,390 tonnes of frozen poultry meat and roughly 297.92 million eggs, according to the Census and Statistics Department.

A CFS spokesperson said the agency has contacted authorities in Argentina and Japan and will continue to monitor updates from the World Organisation for Animal Health and other relevant authorities. Further measures will be taken as the situation develops.
