H5N1 outbreaks hit Vietnamese province in May
Over 5,000 birds destroyed across two households
Two outbreaks of H5N1 avian influenza have been confirmed in Thanh Yen Commune, Dien Bien province, Vietnam, according to Lao Dong, the news agency of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labour.
The outbreaks occurred between May 8 and 25, impacting separate farming households within the commune.
The first outbreak was detected on May 8 at a household in Noong Luong village, with laboratory results confirming H5N1 on May 14. The flock of 1,500 ducks was subsequently destroyed.
A second outbreak followed on May 17 at a household in Viet Yen village, with positive test results returned on May 22. Authorities destroyed a mixed flock of 3,500 chickens and ducks.
In response, local authorities have temporarily banned the purchase, sale, transportation and slaughter of poultry and poultry products in both affected villages. Disinfection measures have been carried out around the two premises.
