Hong Kong bans poultry imports from Minnesota over bird flu
US supplies 11,940 tonnes of frozen poultry to city quarterly
Hong Kong has suspended imports of poultry meat, products and eggs from Big Stone County, Minnesota, after the World Organisation for Animal Health reported a highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza outbreak there.
The city's Centre for Food Safety issued the ban with immediate effect.
In the first three months of this year, Hong Kong imported nearly 12,000 tonnes of frozen poultry meat and 3.53 million eggs from the United States.
Authorities said they have contacted US officials over the matter and will monitor updates from the WOAH and relevant agencies, adjusting measures as the situation develops.
