Hong Kong has suspended imports of poultry meat, products and eggs from a designated area in Alberta, Canada, following a highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza outbreak reported to the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH).

The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) issued the ban with immediate effect, saying the measure was necessary to protect public health. According to Hong Kong's Census and Statistics Department, no poultry meat or eggs were imported from Canada in the first three months of this year.

The CFS said it has contacted Canadian authorities and will continue to monitor updates from the WOAH and other relevant bodies, with further action to be taken as the situation develops.
