The Ontario government is welcoming a $100-million-plus investment from Sunrise Farms, a family-owned Canadian poultry company, to build a new processing facility in Woodstock, Ont., the government announced.

The 155,000-sq.-ft. facility will be one of the most technologically advanced poultry processing plants in Canada, the government said. Once operational, it will increase the company's processing capacity, expand procurement from Ontario farms and support economic growth in rural communities. The project will create 100 new jobs in Woodstock and support 248 existing positions across the province.

"This project represents the largest greenfield investment in Sunrise's history," said David Shoore, CEO of Sunrise Farms. "Upon completion, the new facility will enable Sunrise to respond effectively to increasing demand for Sargent Farms branded halal certified products throughout Ontario and nationwide."

Once Sunrise Farms receives its federal licence from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, it will be able to expand distribution of its Sargent Farms branded products across provincial and territorial borders.

Ontario is supporting the project with up to $4 million through the Invest Ontario Fund.
