South Korea targets US eggs under government import scheme
State subsidies cover freight and repackaging costs

By: South Korea's government is subsidising egg imports through a price stabilisation programme that reimburses private importers for air and sea freight and domestic repackaging costs, making imports commercially viable, according to the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service.
Under the programme, private importers must first win a competitive bidding process run by the Korea Agro-Fisheries and Food Trade Corporation before becoming eligible for reimbursement through the Agricultural and Fishery Products Price Stabilization Fund.
Korean importers are targeting US-origin eggs, citing ample US supply capacity and competitive prices. The USDA noted that table egg imports effectively only occur when government support is in place.
