The estimate for 2012 broiler meat production was reduced from the previous month, down 3 per cent from the previous year. Most of the reduction is the result of lower expectations for broiler weights, according to the USDA's Livestock, Dairy and Poultry Outlook.

During December 2011, broiler meat production was reportedly down by 10 per cent compared to the previous year. The number of birds slaughtered by 9 per cent year over year.

Broiler meat in cold storage at the end of December 2011 was down 24 per cent from the previous year. Cold storage holdings for almost all broiler products at the end of December were also lower than the previous year. The declining level of cold storage broiler stocks has been reflected in increases in wholesale prices.
