Ukraine Meat Exports Hit $316 Million

Compared to 2011, beef exports rose by 95 per cent and pork, poultry meat and offal each rose by 62 per cent.

Overall in 2012, meat production in Ukraine increased by 2.1 per cent and meat and meat products accounted for 15.4 per cent of production of food, beverages and tobacco products.

The ministry of agriculture said that this has been achieved through a steady building of the stocks of cattle, pigs and poultry on farms and homesteads.

"Compared with the previous year, meat and offal food increased by 2.7 per cent, poultry by 14.9 per cent and canned poultry meat by 32.9 per cent," Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food Mykola Prysiazhniuk said.

However, the rate of exports of meat and meat products increased significantly.

Overall, last year Ukraine exported meat and meat products worth $316 million and 42.2 million domestic farmers supplied 8,996 tonnes of beef to foreign markets - 95 per cent more than in 2011.

Pork exports reached $92.6 million in value and 20,208 tonnes in volume.

The largest exports were in poultry meat and offal at 80,653 tonnes in volume, worth $145.2 million.

Exports of pork and poultry rose by 62 per cent.

The state programme to boost the economy in 2013-2014 includes building and renovating 153 livestock facilities, which will increase livestock production.

In addition, in 2013 the state is to support individual farmers and owners of family farms to increase production of beef and pork.
