Viet Nam Reports HPAI Outbreak in Hoa Binh
VIET NAM - The Vietnamese veterinary authorities have reported an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in Hoa Binh, affecting ducks and chickens.The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) received an immediate notification on 7 October 2013. The outbreak was initially observed on 7 October, and confirmed on Sunday, 13 October after a reverse transcription - polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test was carried out at the National Centre for Veterinary Diagnosis. The test confirmed the presence of the HPAI virus, serotype H5N1.
A total of 1175 birds were found susceptible, out of which 370 cases were reported. All 370 birds were found dead, while the remaining 800 birds were destroyed. 700 ducks and 474 chickens were found affected.
The source of the outbreak remains inconclusive.
The OIE, in conjunction with the country's veterinary authorities, have applied several measures to contain the situation.
