VIV Poultry Personality 2014 is Dr Piet Simons, a past President of the World's Poultry Science Association and now Ambassador for the Dutch Poultry Centre after a career in poultry research.

He said: My father was a poultry farmer and he encouraged me to study chickens because he said that, in the future, they would become very important. I kept some hens myself as a small boy and chickens became my life."

Otto can Tujil, Technical Director of Aviagen EPI, is the winner of the VIV Poultry Breeder Personality Award 2014.

"I started by studying pig and poultry husbandry at college," he said, "but my first job was in poultry and I have stayed in the business ever since. Although I had planned to retire in April this year, I have now decided to keep working for another three years. It is still very exciting and I would recommend young people everywhere to come to the industry."

The Winner of the award for VIV Meat Personality Award 2014 is Jack Hazenbroek, creator of the poultry processing systems company, Systemate Holland. He remembers as a five-year-old boy, helping his father to take chickens to the market. Later, he worked in processing plans and on farms in Australia and the US before returning to Holland to start his own machinery company.

"He said: " For me, the attraction of the poultry business has always been the people involved in it. Even as the business evolves, the people in it are still the best part."

A special Oeuvre Award was presented to Nigel Horrox, owner and publisher of Positive Action Publications.

In the citation, VIV exhibition manager, Ruwan Berculo, spoke of his contribution to the international development of the poultry sector.

Mr Horrox has worked with poultry since graduating in veterinary medicine from the University of Edinburgh in 1976. In addition to his expertise in poultry health, food safety and microbiology, Mr Horrox is a consultant to poultry companies in Asia and Africa and will be the next President of the World's Veterinary Poultry Association.

Positive Action publishes titles including International Hatchery Practice, International Poultry Production, International Pig Topics, International Dairy Topics, International Food Hygiene and International Meat Topics.
