Poultry Price Jumps To Rs 96 Per Kg

Chief Convener of the Pakistan Poultry Association (PPA), Maroof Siddiqui said retail price of live chicken (broiler) was Rs 72 per kg on July 26 (three weeks ago).

“The demand for chicken meat is also on the higher side and it’s price have risen to Rs 165 per kg due to short supply and farmers are facing problems these days due to high mortality among chicks of broiler hen.”

Mr Siddiqui said had already predicted this at a press conference a one month ago that heavy rains had already washed away many of the poultry farms in interior Sindh and on the suburbs of Karachi due to which poultry prices were to rise and this trend is likely to persist in the coming days too.

He said that broiler was being sold at Rs 66 in the market on July 12.

Citing reasons for this abnormal jump in prices of poultry products he mentioned the ongoing marriage season and improved weather conditions allowing families to enjoy their evening and night hours in fast food and other restaurants thereby pushing the demand of chicken meat up.

The price rise was further aggravated by the devastation faced by the poultry sector during the rain havoc in Karachi month-and-a-half ago, which resulted in destruction of the whole infrastructure.
