New Poultry Processing Board Set up

INDIA - The Cabinet has gven its approval for establishment of National Meat & Poultry Processing Board with its headquarters at Delhi.

The total funds allocated over a period of three years are 146.4 million ruppes (INR) for the establishment of the Board.

The aims of the Board are:

  • The Ministry of Food Processing Industries will register the National Meat & Poultry Processing Board (NMPPB) as a Society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. The Board which will be autonomous, will be initially facilitated by the Government and will be subsequently managed by the industry and is expected to boost growth of the sector, benefiting both the producers and the processors.
  • The Board will provide help to the industry in setting up/modernization of abattoirs by providing technical consultancy for production of hygienic meat and meat products and for utilization of slaughterhouse wastes to prepare animal by products with value addition.
  • The Board will help the industry to provide a focused approach to address all the issues related to production of hygienic, safe and wholesome meat/meat products; harmonization of domestic standards with international standards; develop uniform and effective meat quality testing systems in the country; and also to address the environmental pollution issues arising out of the present conditions in the meat industry.
