New H5N1 Outbreak in Laos

LAO - The veterinary authorities have sent a report to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) regarding a new outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI).

The Lao veterinary authority has sent an Immediate Notification dated 26 February to OIE concerning one new outbreak of HPAI.

The one case was in Khoua in Phongsaly province in the north of the country. It involved a flock of 3314 free-range village poultry, 730 of which died. The rest of the flock has been destroyed.

The date of the last outbreak of HPAI was December 2008.

The presence of the H5N1 virus sub-type has been confirmed.
