More HPAI Cases Reported in Orissa State
ORISSA, INDIA - The Indian veterinary authorities have reported another outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza in Orissa, affecting rural backyard poultry.

The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) received follow-up report no. 2 yesterday, 18 January.
A total of 4923 birds showed signs of susceptibility, out of which 19 cases were reported. The 19 affected birds were found dead as a result of the H5N1 virus. No birds were destroyed.
According to the report, epidemiological investigation is ongoing. Stamping out of all domestic poultry is being applied in an approximately 3-km radius zone around the outbreak followed by compensation to the owners.
An intensive surveillance campaign has been launched in a 10-km radius zone including:
- closure of poultry markets and prohibition on sale and transportation of poultry products in the infected zone.
- disinfection of premises after culling and sealing of premises where appropriate.
Restocking will be applied in accordance with a specified protocol.
The source of the outbreak is yet to be uncovered.
