The latest poultry meat production statistics from Defra – for January 2012 – pointed to an 11 per cent increase in output for the month compared to January 2011.

Looking into the figures in more detail, the volumes of all poultry meat sectors were higher in January than in the same month of the year before. However, by far the most dramatic change is the 65 per cent increase in turkey meat production. This rose from 16,000 tonnes in January 2011 to 26,400 tonnes one year later.

Peter Bradnock, Chief Executive of the British Poultry Council, commented: “It is very encouraging to see that the British Poultry Council’s Turkey Group’s efforts to get more people eating turkey year-round are having an effect.

“Most people eat turkey around Christmas time, but it is a tasty and versatile meat that can be enjoyed in a variety of dishes all year. A turkey is for all year enjoyment, not just for Christmas!”
