Schering-Plough Animal Health Commemorates 50th Anniversary
GLOBAL - Schering-Plough Animal Health Corp. (SPAH), a global leader in advancing the health and welfare of animals, is celebrating its 50th anniversary today.
To commemorate this milestone and to show appreciation for the partnership of veterinarians through the years, SPAH is donating $50,000 to the American Veterinary Medical Foundation (AVMF) to support its Veterinary Medical Assistance Team (VMAT) program. Established in 1963, AVMF is the largest national veterinarian-directed charity dedicated to disaster preparedness and response. The donation from SPAH was presented to Robert P.Gordon, DVM, AVFM immediate past chair, during a ceremony marking the milestone anniversary held on November 30th at the Schering-Plough offices in Summit, New Jersey.
The company's donation will assist VMAT's efforts in providing treatment and aid to animals used in search-and-rescue efforts and animals hurt or endangered by catastrophic events such as floods, hurricanes, fires and earthquakes. Comprised of specially trained veterinarians, veterinary technicians and support personnel, VMAT teams can be deployed to any state or U.S. territory within 24 hours.
"We are very pleased to receive this generous donation from Schering-Plough Animal Health to help us provide the veterinary medical care needed in times of emergency," said R. Tracy Rhodes, DVM, chairman, AVMF board of directors. "We congratulate SPAH on reaching this significant milestone and appreciate the company's commitment to the health and welfare of animals and support of the veterinary medical community."
"Schering-Plough Animal Health's first 50 years have seen challenges as well as exciting innovations," said Raul Kohan, president, SPAH, and group head, Global Specialty Operations (GSO). "This division began as an entrepreneurial initiative and with a far-reaching vision on the part of Schering-Plough to contribute to the well-being of animals. On this 50th anniversary we are pleased to announce that for the first nine months of 2005, SPAH was the fastest-growing animal health company in the world." This is according to a report published by the consulting firm, Wood Mackenzie.
"Schering-Plough Animal Health colleagues are passionate about what they do; they are creative and competitive," Kohan said. And, Kohan has optimism for the division's future. "I'd like for SPAH to be perceived in 2055 the way we are just 50 years into our journey - as a very dynamic leader in the animal health industry."
Kohan also noted, "It is most appropriate that we are sharing this celebration with the American Veterinary Medical Foundation because it is our commitment as a company that is research-based to provide innovative and high-quality products that support our veterinary medical partners in our shared goal of improving animals' lives."
