The Poultry Site’s Sarah Mikesell spoke to Reagan Culbertson, vice president of strategic marketing at Amlan International. Oil-Dri has been a leader in sorbent minerals for more than 80 years and offers advanced applications for diverse markets.

What factors led to the company’s evolution?

Oil-Dri was founded in 1941 with our clay floor absorbent products. We've since diversified into many different applications with our most sophisticated being our animal health products developed by Amlan International.

A pivotal milestone for Oil-Dri was in the 1960s when we fully acquired the mines and manufacturing sites that were supplying us. This allowed us to take full control of the quality and consistency of our products – all the way from the mining site to the end user. Our partners truly trust the quality, consistency and effectiveness of our products.

Tell us about Oil-Dri’s research and development efforts.

Oil-Dri is passionate about innovation. We invest millions of dollars in research and development. For Amlan specifically, we leverage the Richard M. Jaffe Center for Applied Microbiology Laboratory for in vitro testing, we take advantage of contract research organizations and conduct multiple animal studies annually.

What makes Amlan unique?

Amlan is unique because it's backed by Oil-Dri. Oil-Dri has a rich history in mineral science, and Amlan has unique products that can help producers improve animal health without the use of antibiotics and drive profits. Our mineral is selectively sourced for its unique chemical composition and undergoes proprietary thermal processing to maximize its efficacy. We have a strong team of mineral science experts who can help producers select the right product to drive production efficiency.

Tell us about Amlan’s unique laboratory.

We're standing in the Richard M. Jaffe Center for Applied Microbiology Laboratory. This lab opened in 2019, named after Richard M. Jaffe, our former president and CEO as he was passionate about the life sciences.

Our intention is to use the work completed here for several of our businesses within Oil-Dri. For example, we developed Cat’s Pride Antibacterial Cat Litter that's on store shelves today. Other products include Phylox^®, NeutraPath^®, Enterotec™ and AmSure™ – all Amlan products that increase production efficiency and improve animal health without the use of antibiotics.
