Brazil Ban Poultry Imports From Bird Flu Countries - BRAZIL - Brazil has announced on Tuesday a ban on poultry imports from countries hit with bird flu, the agriculture ministry said. In a statement, the ministry added that it will intensify controls at airports and ports on visitors and their baggage from countries in which there had been outbreaks of the highly infectious disease since 1991.

"Bird flu is foreign to Brazil and has been discovered in countries that don't export poultry products to this country," Jorge Caetano, acting coordinator of agriculture and livestock sanitary programs and inspection.

The ministry advised poultry producers to limit visits of people from countries where the disease had occurred and to immediately report any sign of an outbreak.

Brazil's Agriculture Ministry said that the deadly disease was transmitted mainly through excretions and secretions of birds.

It said that the disease could be transmitted by visitors to poultry farms through contaminated shoes, transport material and bird rations.
