Farmers threaten action

HUNGARY - Several thousand farmers from all 19 counties in Hungary have pledged to participate in the nationwide campaign to collect and bring bus-loads of angry farmers to protest at Kossuth tér, in front of parliament and the ministry of agriculture and rural development (FVM) today.

Farmers have also asked Budapest residents to express their solidarity with their plight.

Miklós Hanó, chairman of the farmers and consumers movement Magyar Gazdák és Fogyasztók Önvédelmi Mozgalma (MAGFÖM), said that as a follow up to emphasize their case his group had originally also planned a similar demonstration on Kossuth tér.

"However we don't want to cause division, so we are also joining the February 17 demo."

Farmers plan to stage demonstrations in front of parliament on February 17 and 21, a representative of four lobby groups announced on Wednesday.
