Federal inspectors close poultry-processing plant

US - For the second time within about a week, federal inspectors have closed a poultry-processing plant run by House of Raeford Farms, a U.S. Agriculture Department spokesman said yesterday.

About 1,300 workers at a turkey-processing plant in Raeford remained idled yesterday after inspectors who work at the plant ordered it closed Saturday, said Matt Baun, a spokesman for USDA's food safety and in-spection service in Washington.

"This wasn't out of the blue. The plant knew about our concerns all along and they haven't effectively addressed those concerns," Baun said of the shutdown, which he said was caused by management's failure to deal with food-contamination risks.
