Go crazy for eggs in May

GEORGIA - National Egg Month and Egg Month in Georgia are being celebrated in May. The egg industry chose May as Egg Month because it is a traditionally slow-selling period for egg producers, following the high demand around Easter.

Egg sales around the holiday can peak to more than half as much as the average monthly sales for a full year.

The American Egg Board, which runs the National Egg Month campaign, is a partner this year with a number of supermarket chains throughout the U.S. in promoting eggs this month.

These supermarkets, the board says, represent 25 percent of the U.S. population and will be using in-store promotional materials featuring eggs.

The board will team with the supermarkets in radio commercials broadcast in their area. The 60-second commercials will be made up of 45 seconds of egg promotion followed by 15 seconds of airtime for the supermarket chains.

As it does every year, the board also is submitting materials for newspaper food editors to use in egg features throughout May.

This year marks 33 years that Georgia's governor has proclaimed an egg month in the state. It first was celebrated in September.
