Top U.S. producers own 75 percent of market

WASHINGTON - The top 10 U.S. broiler companies provide three-fourths of the nation's chicken, according to a recent 2005 report from compiled from poultry industry sources.

Altogether the top 10 companies averaged a weekly production of 501 million pounds on a ready-to-cook basis, accounting for 75.6 percent of the U.S. market share. While the market share remains the same as last year, 75.6 percent, total average weekly production rose from the 2004 figure of 495 million pounds.

The 44 companies listed in the report had a combined average week production of 675.7 million pounds, an increase from the 652.3 million pounds achieved in 2004.
