Ohio State moves against poultry farm

OHIO - Representatives for the Croton-based company, Ohio Fresh Eggs LLC, were unavailable for comment Thursday. The company disagrees with the penalty and has requested a hearing, the department said.

The department accuses Ohio Fresh Eggs of violating its waste management plan by allowing flies and rodents to get out of control. The department said Ohio Fresh Eggs allowed its manure piles to get too moist, creating a breeding ground for vermin. It has received numerous complaints from neighbors.

Ohio Fresh Eggs has not been fined before, although the state has issued 11 warnings and citations since the farm started in late 2003, said Kevin Elder, the department's executive director of its livestock environmental permitting program.
