Production cost in poultry farming high in Goa: expert

GOA - A day-long seminar on strategies for improving poultry production in Goa, held at the ICAR Research Complex, Old Goa, yesterday discussed in detail the causes for major drop in poultry activities in the state, during recent past.

The director of the Department for Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, Dr T T Naik, who was the chief guest for the inaugural session observed that cost of production in the poultry farming is very high due to the expenses incurred on chicken-feed, labour, water and electricity, which in turn has resulted in low earnings for those who practice the same.

In addition, Mr Naik said, the havoc created by the bird flue disease - Goa being indirectly hit by the epidemic - affected the sales of the broilers and eggs, in the state. He further pointed out that the speedy shift from layer farming to broiler farming in poultry scenario has also confused the local poultry farmers.
