Growers face huge losses

MISSISSIPPI - Mississippi's timber industry, which earned $1.1 billion in 2004, has suffered losses that could greatly exceed that amount because of Hurricane Katrina.

Poultry industry officials are still calculating their losses, but one official said as many as 6 million birds could have perished.

The impact on consumers? Officials aren't willing to say just yet. "For the state as a whole, it's not as bad as it's been to individual farmers," Tommy Gregory, USDA state statistician for Mississippi, said of the poultry losses.
