Growers face huge losses
MISSISSIPPI - Mississippi's timber industry, which earned $1.1 billion in 2004, has suffered losses that could greatly exceed that amount because of Hurricane Katrina.Poultry industry officials are still calculating their losses, but one official said as many as 6 million birds could have perished.
The impact on consumers? Officials aren't willing to say just yet. "For the state as a whole, it's not as bad as it's been to individual farmers," Tommy Gregory, USDA state statistician for Mississippi, said of the poultry losses.
