Hurricane may cause chicken shortages

US - Hurricane damage to southern poultry processing plants could cause minor chicken shortages at grocery stores.

A bulletin from the Fareway corporate headquarters said because of damage from Hurricane Katrina, its supplier of fresh broiler chicken, Sanderson Farms of Mississippi, is out of power. The memo told stores to expect some shortages.

Sanderson Farms expected its plant to be offline for at least 10 days.

Bob Voves, meat manager at the Mason City Fareway, said the store received some chickens Tuesday but not as many as were ordered.

The store is scheduled to receive another shipment today, but Voves said it remains to be seen how many chickens will be in it.
