Sept. is National Chicken month

GEORGIA - Anyone who has lived in the Gainesville-Hall County area for any length of time recognizes the importance of the poultry industry to our community.

In fact, poultry is the No. 1 agricultural commodity in Georgia, representing some 45 percent of the total farm gate income in 2004.

Breaking it down by the numbers, the value of poultry products is impressive. In 2004, poultry farm gate value was more than $4.7 billion with broilers at $4.1 billion, eggs at $439 million and pullets at $110 million.

And Georgia led all states in broiler production with more than 1.5 billion produced.

Here in Hall, poultry and egg farm gate value totaled more than $290 million, making us the No. 2 county in the state in total farm gate value and poultry production.
