Poultry: Turkey industry reassures consumers

US - With Thanksgiving a month away, the turkey industry has launched a public relations offensive to ward off potential backlash from fears of bird flu.

In a news conference sponsored by the Department of Agriculture on Wednesday, officials touted their strict security measures and reminded Americans that the country doesn't import poultry from affected countries.

And companies such as Butterball, a top U.S. turkey seller, say they haven't received many calls from customers concerned about avian flu, which has been spreading through Asia and parts of Europe.

The virus has devastated poultry in Asia and killed 62 people.
