Egg giant admits: I can't take much more

AUSTRALIA - The state's largest egg producer has put one of his farms on the market and admitted he is "slowly going out of business" as cheap produce is dumped on the SA market.

Golden Eggs managing director Mark Bressington, who slaughtered 8000 hens this week, said he could not hold on to his Two Wells property. "There is no point having birds on the farms," he said yesterday. "I am losing money by feeding them." Golden Eggs also sold its Angle Vale property, which housed 50,000 birds, several months ago.

Mr Bressington said the two properties accounted for 50 per cent of his business.

Golden Eggs has killed 78,000 hens since interstate companies started dumping eggs in SA, with another 30,000 hens to be killed. Another of the company's four properties would be on the market early next year, Mr Bressington said.

"I am slowly going out of business," he said. "It has never been this bad."

Independent MLC Nick Xenophon said local egg producers only wanted "a fighting chance and a level playing field".
