Russia limits poultry imports from Azerbaijan

RUSSIA - Russia has limited poultry imports from Azerbaijan after the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu was found in wild birds on the Caspian Sea coast, officials of the Agriculture Ministry said on Thursday.

"Apart from the ban on imports of live birds, limits are introduced on imports of eggs, poultry and all kinds of poultry products, feed and equipment for keeping and killing birds," the ministry was quoted by the RIA-Novosti news agency as saying.

Last week, a statement from the Azerbaijan's Health Ministry said that lab test results from London on samples from wild birds on the Caspian Sea coast showed they had the H5N1 bird flu virus.

Though no cases of human infection have been detected, the ministry has appealed to people to avoid contact with fowl and to isolate domestic poultry from wild birds.
