Use of IT in poultry farming stressed

INDIA - Along with automation and mechanisation, Information Technology should be utilised in a big way to make dairy and poultry farming profitable, said Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Science University (TANUVAS) Vice-chancellor N Balaraman, here, on Thursday.

Declaring open a new building at the Veterinary University Training and Research Centre here, he said, agriculture activities in India have come down during the past 15 years due to various factors as is indicated by the fact that the nation had to import 56 tonnes of wheat in 2005 alone.

In this scenario, poultry farming makes for an alternative profitable profession, Balaraman said, adding that veterinary colleges had an important role to play in encouraging villagers to take up the activity.

Stressing on employment-oriented education the VC said that the duty of every educated man was to take technology to the grass-roots level and to teach laymen how to use it.

He added that Indian Council for Agricultural Research had allotted Rs 2.45 crore towards improving infrastructure in veterinary colleges and for providing adequate amenities for students.
