Price summary

Broiler prices in China ended mixed in the week ending Apr 19. Prices were higher in the provinces of Henan, Guangdong and Jiangsu, but remained sluggish in Liaoning, Shandong and Guangxi.

Market analysis

Despite expectations of improved broiler demand in the run up to the Labour Day holidays (first week of May), the outlook for overall broiler consumption has been rather uncertain due to warmer weather conditions. The weakness in live hog prices in some regions has also affected prices of broilers.

Prices of fast growth (49 days) broilers in Guangdong province registered sharp gains on increased consumption. However, in the provinces of Shandong, Liaoning and Guangxi, frozen meat plants were seeing slower sales of poultry meat products as demand for such products in the major cities has stayed weak. Sellers were also facing higher inventory pressure, which had a negative impact on prices.

Market forecast

With slightly more than ten days to the Labour Day holidays, sellers are not likely to increase broiler supplies to the market as they do not expect demand to rise quickly.

In the week ahead, broiler prices would continue to move within a narrow range. In regions where broiler prices are high, some downward movements are expected.
