Poultry board chairman re-elected - UK - Members of the NFU Poultry Board unanimously re-elected Charles Bourns as chairman last week.

Charles and his wife Beverley rear chickens, tucked away on the southern edge of the Cotswolds. The son of a surgeon, he followed the footsteps of his grandparents into farming. Charles and Beverley have two children, James and Elizabeth.

Charles entered farming after a successful career in sales and marketing where he played an active part in creating a brand leader in horse feed.

After being re-elected to the post, Charles’ first task was to appoint three new roles for the board, all as vice chairman representing Eggs, Poultry Meat and Turkey. Each new role will act as a specialist spokesman for their particular area.

Duncan Priestner was elected to represent Eggs, Michael Bailey was elected to represent Turkey and Nigel Joice was nominated as the representative for Poultry Meat.

Charles thanked members for their continued support.

He said: “Things are moving so fast, I think it’s important for the NFU to have specialist representatives for each of our three key areas.

“I plan to have monthly meetings with the vice chairmen to keep things moving between board meetings.” Three new members were also co-opted onto the Poultry Board, joining the nine-strong team. They are David Whistance, Andrew Hignett and John Riddell.
