Russian Chicken Farmers Protest WTO Entry

RUSSIA - On Wednesday, April 19, a rally against Russia’s accession to the World Trade Organization took place in front of Economy Ministry’s headquarters in downtown Moscow. The rally gathered representatives of various poultry farms.

“The purpose of our action is to draw the Economic Development and Trade Ministry’s attention to the problem: we are against joining the WTO because this is disadvantageous for Russia,” Federation Council member Sergei Lisovksy, one of those behind the protest, told Interfax agency.

Lisovsky said that the WTO is an organization that benefits exporting countries, which Russia is not yet a country that exports its products. “As long as Russia has not become an exporting country, it should not joint the WTO, because this would strangle its economy,” he said.
