Anti-salmonella plan in the works

CZECH REPUBLIC - The State Veterinary Administration (SVSÈR) is preparing an anti-salmonella vaccination campaign at poultry farms identified by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) with a high risk of developing the pathogen.

The EFSA last week declared the Czech Republic, with 62 percent of major Czech poultry farms infected, as among the riskiest place in the EU to eat an egg. SVSÈR salmonella control expert Petr Šatrán said the figure refers to facilities, not the number of laying hens or eggs infected.

“We want to start vaccinations as soon as possible,” Šatrán said, adding that the SVSÈR is negotiating with the Ministry of Agriculture about the precise terms for a campaign.
