Japan lifts ban on French poultry imports

TOKYO - Japan lifted a ban on imports of French poultry, including foie gras, following a four-month suspension due to concerns about bird flu.

"We have confirmed the purification of the disease in France," the farm ministry said in a statement.

Japan, however, will continue imposing a ban on imports of poultry from the southwestern region of Landes, where 10 pct of establishments vaccinate birds. Japan does not want to import vaccinated poultry.

Japan is the fourth largest importer of French foie gras after Spain, Switzerland and Belgium, buying nearly 400 tons last year.
