EU Extends Ban on Import of Poultry Products from Turkey

EU - The European Union has decided to extend its ban on imports on poultry products and pet birds from Turkey until the end of 2006.

The EU Commission said on Tuesday that the ban on imports of poultry products and pet birds imposed on four countries including Turkey, China, Malaysia and Thailand had been extended.

The suspension will be extended until the end of 2006 for Turkey and until the end of 2007 for the remaining three countries.

The EU had suspended the import of poultry products from Turkey in 2005 following an outbreak of bird flu which killed at least four teenagers.

The EU commission is to meet at the beginning of 2007 to assess the situation regarding Turkey.
