Thousands of chickens die in fire at Pa. farm

LANCASTER - About 12,000 chickens died in a fire that destroyed a two-story poultry house, authorities said.

The cause of the fire Saturday morning at a Manheim farm remains unknown, said Dan Reif, chief of the Manheim fire company.

When firefighters arrived at the farm around 11:45 a.m., three-quarters of the 300-by-50-foot chicken house was burning, Reif told the Sunday News of Lancaster.

There wasn't anything left to save, so firefighters let the fire burn itself out while preventing the flames from spreading to surrounding fields, Reif said.

The chickens had just been placed in the structure the day before, Reif said.

He estimated the loss at $275,000.
