VIETNAM - Every year, Vietnam's poultry breeders produce around 16-17% of the total live weight of poultry and cattle, and 19% of total revenue from livestock breeding.

It has been a major challenge for the sector to cope with the recent bird flu epidemic, and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has designed a project to restructure the domestic poultry breeding system to encourage sustainable development.

Data from the General Statistical Office show that more than 70% of rural households raise poultry. Discouragingly, however, 65% of these households raise poultry at a small scale with low effectiveness, and almost no areas have made detailed plans or policies for developing concentrated poultry breeding sites removed from residential areas.

At present, only 20-30 of poultry have been vaccinated, and over the past two years, the bird flu epidemic has caused enormous losses for the sector. Between late 2003 and early 2004, the sector lost nearly VND3 trillion due to the death of 43.94 million fowl. At the same time, poultry breeders must import 100% of high-yield poultry breeds from abroad, while Vietnamese poultry eggs and meat are not exported.
