Shell Eggs Broken Down 6 Percent

Shell eggs broken totaled 167 million dozen during September 2006, down 6 percent from September a year ago, and 8 percent below the 182 million broken last month. September 2006 contained 21 weekdays (including one holiday) and 5 Saturdays. September 2005 contained 22 weekdays (including one holiday) and 4 Saturdays.

During calendar year 2006 through September, shell eggs broken totaled 1.53 billion dozen, down 1 percent from the comparable period in 2005. Total edible liquid from eggs broken in 2006 was 1.99 billion pounds, down 1 percent from 2005.

Data presented in this report were compiled from inspection reports of the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). The best available data at time of publication were used.
