Regulations exempt 'backyard' poultry

US - Small poultry flocks that are slaughtered on-site pose little or no biosecurity risk to commercial flocks, the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services ruled recently.

Regulations are in place to limit and license live-bird markets — consistently implicated in the spread of avian flu.

But state animal health experts ruled that small, self-contained poultry and egg operations posed little risk to flu-vulnerable commercial flocks.
