Turkey for Christmas gets expensive

INDIA - Kolkata has always kept the tradition of Christmas with turkey alive. In comparison to the humble chicken, turkey is very expensive but Kolkata is all ready for this once-a-year splurge.

This year a kilo of turkey costs Rs 270, so a whole turkey comes for Rs 1000 or more.

Add to that expensive ingredients for its dressing and stuffing and the roast turkey on your Christmas dinner table could burn a hole in your pocket.

"If one turkey costs Rs 1000, one will have to spend Rs 700-800 for the dressing required to cook it and for the stuffing, only then will one get it's authentic taste," said Arvind Lal Sonkar, turkey seller.

High price

Sonkar is the only turkey seller in Kolkata. He normally sells chicken but just before Christmas he travels to Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka to get his supply of the big bird.

Daunted by high prices and dipping sales, he has bought just 400 turkeys this year. Some Kolkatans are buying despite the price. Others, simply window shopping.
