Irish Poultry Processors said spiralling worldwide wheat prices would lead to increases of around 15% in the price of whole and fillet chickens.

The industry group said Irish chickens were fed mainly on wheat. It said droughts and consequent poor harvests in Australia and parts of Europe had hit supply, while the increasing use of grain in green fuels was also pushing prices higher.
