The house is part of a research project to evaluate if solar power is a viable source of energy for poultry houses. The project team will look at how easy it is to get green energy rebates, how much the system will save on the electricity bill and how long it will take for solar panels to pay for itself.

“This is a tremendous opportunity to really help our farmers,” said Gov. Ruth Ann Minner. “It could make a wonderful difference in the way agriculture works in the state.”

Chicken houses are energy-intensive, as the temperature has to be monitored closely and the building has to be ventilated by fans.
