Ag Census Shows More Poultry, Less Beef in Area
CANADA - Census of Agriculture data continues to pour it -- with lots of information nationally, provincially, and from right here at home.
Here in this province -- one of the more interesting trends is to put more land under glass as greenhouse space increased more than 20 percent.
In Huron County alone the amount of greenhouse space is now 2.6 million square feet, up from just over a million square feet in 2001.
Perth and Grey also saw greenhouse space increase -- while Bruce and Wellington saw drops.
Sheep and Goat farming is on the rise in the area -- with 30 more of these operations in Mid-Western Ontario.
The number of poultry farms is up -- going against the national trend.
Wellington and Perth both saw new poultry farms started up -- while the number of poultry operations in Grey is down.
The number of Huron and Bruce poultry farms is unchanged.
The number of beef farmers in the area is down -- with Statistics Canada saying a lot of that having to do with BSE.
